How to Build a Grocery Budget You Can Actually Keep

A practical, five-step method for setting a realistic grocery budget, planning meals and tracking weekly spending.

Start with what you really spend

Pull the last two or three months of bank and card statements and add up every supermarket and grocery charge. Leave out restaurants and takeout. Divide by the number of weeks. That figure is your baseline, and it is usually higher than people expect.

Set a number slightly below the baseline

A 5 to 10 percent cut is realistic for most households. Deep cuts tend to rebound after a few weeks, so aim for a number you can hold for months.

Plan dinners before you shop

Pick five dinners, write down the ingredients, and check your pantry first. Leave two nights open for leftovers or a simple backup meal.

Shop from a list sorted by aisle

A list in store order cuts impulse buys and time spent wandering. Only buy what is on it, with a small allowance for a good sale.

Check in weekly, not monthly

A monthly review tells you what already went wrong. A weekly five-minute check lets you adjust the next trip while there is still budget left.
